Marklund made her name with The Bomber, a blockbusting thriller
featuring reporter Annika Bengtzon, and in this equally exciting
novel she explores her heroine's earlier years. At the start of the
narrative, young Annika is struggling for her big break in
journalism. She has been taken on as a temp by a Stockholm
newspaper but so far she has done little but field crank calls over
the phone. Now, however, one of her tip-offs leads to the chance
she has been seeking. The raped and strangled body of a prostitute
has been found in a cemetery, and Annika manages to talk herself on
to the investigation with a couple of senior journalists. Naive and
hesitant, Annika has to overcome a sense of inferiority and the
disdain of her hardened colleagues, especially when the death
proves not to be the straightforward killing that it at first
seems. With formidable resolve, Annika begins to do a bit of
sleuthing on her own account and soon provides a string of scoops
for her paper. Before long we are into the realm of political
scandal, sinister sex joints and professional jealousy. Brief
flashbacks at the beginning of each chapter also tell the
prostitute's sad story - a clever device that adds to rather than
detracts from the tempo. It seems stories featuring Annika are to
become a series if this book proves anything like as successful as
its predecessor. And it should, for all the right ingredients are
here. The tension and pace are unrelenting, the setting of a hot
Swedish summer suitably captivating, and the character of Annika
one that earns the reader's respect through her guts and
intelligence. Like The Bomber, this book is strong on scintillating
dialogue (well translated by Kajsa von Hofsten), and if the
language and the sex scenes sometimes come across as stronger than
necessary, they certainly contribute to the underlying menace that
holds the story together. A gripping tale well told, and a
protagonist with a big future. (Kirkus UK)
The adrenaline-fuelled prequel to Liza Marklund's bestselling
thriller THE BOMBER Eight years before the sensational events of
THE BOMBER, fledgling reporter Annika Bengtzon has just started a
summer job at a Swedish tabloid. Before she can even begin to get
her bearings in the gritty, fast-paced world of journalism, Annika
learns that the body of a young woman has been discovered - raped,
murdered and abandoned in a cemetery. A powerful government
minister emerges as the prime suspect, with the general election
only a few weeks away. Fuelled by ambition, hampered by
inexperience, Annika finds herself immersed in a steamy underworld
of sex clubs, sinister power plays and a media feeding frenzy. This
murder case could become Annika's breakthrough story - or the event
that seals her doom.
