Joseph and Feya were downstairs arranging a few indispensable adjuncts for the reception of the Club that evening. It was Benjamin's evening too; it came as a sort of honor day, a preemptor gloriae, for the fine performance at the college, which had stamped the young Jew among his people with a singular distinction. They met each other with nodding heads and inscriptive fingers and whispering comments, and the sum and substance of them all was: "That boy of Nassi's Eh?" Miriam had been looking intently at Benjamin; the young love she had confessed to him the night of the Bar Mitzvah had been then a half childish weakness, though it was entwined deeply around the roots of her heart and years and age had brought it still nearer the sensible surface of consciousness and feeling. There was a sweet limpidity in the girl, a natural unostentatious sincerity, and there was too the heritage of a southern clime and a southern blood, and indeed they both were much older. Benjamin had matured; the ripening seeds of life in him, as in her, reached upward eagerly to expand into the bloom, the leafage and the fruitage of experience. They had been nurtured upon the same theories of life, and because in both a striking comeliness had developed, the young man and woman had been drawn together in a companionship which started in the growth of affection and then the deeper feelings of dependence.
