There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your Philosophy. Shakespeare. The earliest recollections of Juliet Kilmain were tinged with gloom. During the first ten years of her life, she had resided in a desolate mansion, upon the western coast of Ireland, with her mother, and scarcely more domestics than were requisite to take care of the house. Mrs. Kilmain spent the greater part of her time in solitude, in devotional exercise, in the practice of every austerity, sanctioned Vol. in. B by the Roman Catholic religion. She neither paid nor received visits; the only person who intruded upon her retirement was Father Dennis, the village Priest; and the only occasion upon which she ever mixed with her fellow-creatures was, to attend mass. Of her daughter, the little Juliet, she was passionately fond, but her affection expressed itself rather in tears and lamentations, with occasional bursts of tenderness, than in habitual attention and caresses. The utmost that she did for the child's instruction was, giving her lessons to learn against she next admitted her to her presence. When such tasks were finished, Juliet ran wild amongst the children of the village. When Juliet was ten years old, .
