The Merchants' Association will be represented by delegates in the Congress. o Broadway Merchants and the Subway--Appeal has been made by The Merchants' Association to the Public Service Commission for the First District and to the Fire Commissioner to compel the contractors who are building the subway under Broadway to comply with the terms of their contracts by constructing fire-proof walls to take the place of walls removed where vaults are broken into. The Fire Insurance Underwriters have issued notice that insurance rates will be materially increased unless this precaution is taken. The Fire Commissioner has responded to the request of this Association by exercising the power conferred upon him by the Hoey Fire Prevention Law to order the contractors to install proper partitions. o The Express Rate Hearing--The Interstate Commerce Commission has no tified The Merchants' Association that it will hear argument upon its order respecting express rates and regulations, in Washington on October 9 to 12. The express companies will be required In this hearing to show cause why the rates proposed by the Commission should not become effective. The Merchants' Association will be represented at the hearing and will contend for a still further reduction in certain of the rates. o Freight Rate Increase Suspended--The proposed Increase in freight rates by the trans-continental railroads from the east to the Pacific coast has been suspended until the end of this year by order of the Interstate Commerce Commission, which proposes to give hearings upon the fairness of the proposed new rates. Members of The Merchants' Association who will be affected by the increase are requested to report to the Traffic Bureau of the Association, so that it may make suitable repre...
