VII THE MOON OF DARK TONGUES It should be explained that Rick Allison's moon-signs did not always appear on the wall of the Council Chamber at the proper--almanac--time; the reasonbeing that, think as hard as ever he might, the Chief of the Natchez could not always hit upon an appropriate legend for the current month. Thus, in May a full fortnight had sped away before the ceremony of the Hanging of the Sign took place. In the meantime, several things had happened. Madame Le Breton had gone over to France on a visit, taking Mademoiselle Floris Le Breton with her; Mr. and Mrs. Allison, with their own and the Le Breton children, had come to Mandarin, the Allison sugar-plantation in St. Mary's Parish; and the blackberries were ripening. It was this last happening, and the consequent dark purple of his own tongue and those of his fellow-warriors, which had solved for Rick the May problem. The Council Chamber at Mandarin was the ballroom, --disused in summer, --to which the whole of the third floor was given up. It was a most fascinating spot, having a musician's dais at the upper end, where Rick could sit enthroned, cross-legged, to preside over the "lodge." Tucked away in the green baize covers of violins and 'cellos were various bows which really looked (a little) like long-stemmed pipes; to say nothing of a silver-mounted flute in its own bag, a veritable calumet to a rightseeing eye The outlook from the broad low windows at either end was over the vast cane-fields of Mandarin, where the cane at this moment rustled its blue-green blades to the whip of the Gulf wind.
