I stood there in the lane with Arthur's arms protecting me, scarcely able to believe that it was not a beautiful dream. Mrs Saunders helped to give it reality. She rushed forward in the greatest terror. 'Miss, miss, ' she cried, ' what are you doing? Who is this? Remember your promise. Harry 'll never forgive me if you run away--just what they've been saving you from ' 'What nonsense have you been told?' I replied indignantly. 'Arthur, what do you want me to do?' He glanced at Mrs Saunders, by this time dissolved in tears, the sight of which made me regret my harshness. 'She has been good and kind to me, ' I hastened to say. 'I don't want to get her into trouble. She and her husband have only been made tools of--perhaps we had better go home with her--it is true I did promise--I 'll tell you all afterwards Oh Arthur, what I have gone through ' and I had now hard work to keep back my own tears. 'It is all over now, my darling. But'--and his face changed darkly--' when I come across the perpetrators of this infernal plot' He stopped. 'Yes, ' he went on, 'we will go back to the farm, for there your father and others are waiting for us;' and as we walked on, followed by the trembling Mrs Saunders, he explained to me a little of what I have already related, adding that my father and his supporters had made their way to the Saunders's house from the other side, but that a curious instinct that he would find me myself somewhere nearer the marked tree had led him to come up the steep ascent from Kammersbay, guided some part of the way by Mahlah.
