An Annette Kinnear novel is always a reason for celebration her fast-paced romantic thrillers combine action and excitement with gritty, steamy romance while mixing a sense of realism with just enough escapism that the reader can disappear into her rollicking plots with ease. This is Kinnears first novel, the book which sets the foundation for her wonderful On the Bit series. We are introduced to the attractive and determined Catherine, the darkly handsome and mysterious Rivas, as well as a supporting cast of eccentric likeables, including a magnificent Andalusian stallion. And it is the latter that provides a common denominator through a book that takes the reader to four continents on a roller-coaster of a ride that switches swiftly between exhilarating chases and desperate escapes. Kinnears passion for horses rises off the page, colouring a good novel with that extra dimension that turns it into a great one. Nevertheless, it is Kinnears mastery of prose that makes On the Bit Catherine such a wonderful read. I was captivated by the descriptions of her characters, by her ability to transport the reader into the world which she has created. Part of this, certainly, is her extensive research and consequent attention to detail, but mainly it is Kinnears power over the written word. Yes, this is a book to be enjoyed by everyone but if you have even the slightest interest in horses, please, do not delay in grabbing yourself a copy.
