Save in portraiture Maes rarely painted his figures life size; but, besides the Card Players in this Gallery, other compositions of his on the same large scale arc known: for example: La Beveusa (a girl at a window) in the Amsterdam State-Museum; a fine group of two figures belonging to the Society " Arti et Amicitiaj" at Amsterdam; an Old Woman, in the Brussels Gallery, and L'heureux Enfant, a picture containing three figures, which was sold with the San Donato collection in 1SS0. Mae etched a few plates. lUi combination acui Dutch words is pronounced Uko 4 in the Fpg'i'h wurJ Mar, rat/wr, etc. In tact the o in iuch coses is silent, and its pnonetie use is to lengthen the sellable. Signed with the monogram of the painter. On wood, 15j in. A. by 12J in. w. No. 159. The Dutch Housewife. A girl scraping parsnips, with a child by her side watching her. On the other side is the Flemish kruik or beer-jug, so often introduced into the pictures of this master. Signed, and datod 1655. On wood, I3. in. h. by 11$ in. /.
