His earlier portraits are remarkably fine, showing much of 'Rembrandt's influence; those of a later period partake of the Frenchified taste then invading Holland. Save in portraiture Maes rarely painted his figures life size; but, besides the Card Players in this Gallery, other compositions of his on the same large scale arc known: for example: La Beveusa (a girl at a window) in the Amsterdam State-Museum; a fine group of two figures belonging to the Society " Arti et Amicitiaj" at Amsterdam; an Old Woman, in the Brussels Gallery, and L'heureux Enfant, a picture containing three figures, which was sold with the San Donato collection in 1SS0.
