GIBSON, Patrick, E.S.A., was one of the members of the Society of Artists who exhibited in 1808; and published in various periodicals some valuable notices on the History of Art. GILES, James, E.S.A., was born in 1801, at Glasgow, where his father, who was a native of Aberdeenshire, at that time resided. At the age of 13 he was practising as an artist, which was the profession of his father, from whom he received his first instruction. He seems, shortly after this, to have settled in Aberdeen, where he pursued the various branches of his profession till the time of his death. At one time he devoted himself much to portrait painting, in which he gained considerable local reputation; but the class of subjects by which he was best known were representations of Highland scenery, in which red deer were the prominent featur...
