The opening of the new building of the Chamber of Commerce of the State of New-York, which we celebrate to day, is not by any means an event of merely local or even national interest. The gathering at this table of delegates of foreign nations gives ample proof of the international character of the occasion. Applause. The commerce and industry of the United States have of late years achieved much toward an increased importance in the financial and commercial affairs of the world, pushing, at the same time, the Chamber of Commerce of the leading commercial and financial center of the Union to the front rank with her sister organizations of the old world. The wonderful resources which the United States possess in their natural wealth, in agricultural products as well as in raw materials, for nearly all fields of industrial production are, together with the genius of their leading men in finance, commerce and industry, the admiration of the old world. Applause. We of the old world know very well what a large debt of gratitude we owe to the commercial and industrial genius of your nation. That is one of the reasons why we are with you to-day in order to participate, on behalf of our governments, in the dedicatory ceremonies attending the opening of that magnificent building, in which, from to-day, the commercial wisdom and the financial genius of this great nation will centre. And I, for one, will say that I feel proud, indeed, to represent the government of my country at this memorable event. Applause.
