Excerpt: ... Minutes of a meeting of the Advisory Board of Consulting Engineers held in Rome, N. Y., November 3, 1905. Board convened at 1 p. m. Present--Mr. Bond, Chairman, Mr. Brackenridge, Mr. Fry, Colonel Symons. The following letter from Special Deputy State Engineer Allen, regarding the route of the Barge Canal through the city of Rome, was read: "STATE OF NEW YORK, State Engineer And Surveyor, Barge Canal Office, Albany, October 10, 1905. Subject: Routes through Rome. Hon. Edward A. Bond, Chairman Advisory Board of Consulting Engineers, Albany, N. Y.: Hear Sir--1 submit herewith for your consideration a map showing various routes which have been surveyed for the proposed canal through the city of Rome, File No. 3.111-130, and blue-print. File No. 3.111-94, showing the details of one of the routes. The route which appears to me to be the best is the route which is marked on Map No. 3.111-130 as "Metal Works Line" which leaves the valley of the river just east of the Rome Locomotive Works, passing to the north of those work and south of the new plant of the Rome Metal Company, and enters the Mohawk river in the vicinity of Mohawk street, passing down the river into the Black river canal and joins the present Erie canal near the Stanwix Hall Hotel with a 5 curve. It is probable that at least a guard gate will have to be provided in the vicinity of the Black river canal and between the Mohawk river and the Rome Locomotive Works. The route east of Rome after leaving the vicinity of the Rome Locomotive Works will skirt along the north side of the valley of the Mohawk river with a surface elevation of 429.5 to the mouth of Nine mile creek, and will constitute the eastern portion of the summit level.
