His beribboned coquette was more than a fashion plate; she represented the season itself. “These adds up to summer,” the magazine noted, “bright sun, warm sand, and a purely theoretical beach costume in giddy colours.” The get-up might have been made up, but fashion’s love affair with Shocking Pink, the hue named and popularized by designer Elsa Schiaparelli, with whom Bérard often collaborated, was real and lasting.
