With his ever-faithful friend, a good cigar, he waited to be served. Taking a dainty envelope from his pocket, he gazed intently upon it. "Strange, this is the very first note I have received from the 'gal' since she came here to live. So she is begging me (yes, 'begging' is the word she uses) to come and dine with them tonight. Well, there is nothing I like better or enjoy more than the at-home feeling I have on these rare occasions, when Mrs Harper, Katherine and your humble servant are fortunate enough to dine alone. I wonder if I should have sent her a note of acceptance instead of using the ever-ready telephone? I do hope everything goes well while I am away. Funny this trip does not offer near the pleasure it did when first proposed. I suppose like everything else in life, what we can have without effort is not near the pleasure as the thing we want but can't quite reach. I guess I am growing fast into a crusty 'old bach.' No doubt Bob Wrenn will plead his suit and my blessings will be asked when I get home. These pretty girls are not long getting settled in life. Bob is a good fellow with plenty for two. In the eyes of the world it will be an exceptional match. I wonder if it will be necessary for him to know all the details of the 'gal's' birth. Would it be right not to tell him?" So busy with his own thoughts was he that the grinning waiter had to remind him that his coffee would be cold. With a start, as if he were suddenly awakened, he smiled to himself. Hurriedly eating his lunch, he lighted another cigar, leaving a generous tip for the waiter and paid the cashier. Going straight to his office, he was surprised to find Bob Wrenn waiting.
