Lost Kingdoms of Britain - Kent (Paperback)

Popular account of the centuries Kent spent as an independent kingdom from the depths of the Dark Ages to the 830s when it passed under the rule of Wessex. Based on the Roman civitas of Cantium, Kent became an English kingdom under the famously ruthless mercenary brothers Hengist and Horsa. From these bloody beginnings, Kent rose in power, wealth and status under its ruling dynasty, the Eskings, to become the most prestigious in Britain. The first Christian mission to convert the pagan English came to Kent in 598, after which the history of the kingdom takes a more secure written form. Hosting the Archbishops of the English at Canterbury, Kent gained in respect and prestige at the same time as its economy and power went into a decline. Kent retained unique and at times odd social and political features that set it apart from other English kingdoms right up to its demise as an independent kingdom. The final years were spent in heroic warfare against the Mercians, then in negotiation with Wessex leading to an amalgamation of the two kingdoms through marriage. Illustrated with maps, photos and artworks this book draws on the latest archaeological finds as well as on ancient records to provide an account of the centuries when Kent was an independent kingdom. In doing so the book seeks to unravel some of the mysteries of the Dark Ages.
