It is a tributary of the Kawarau River, which in turn feeds into the Clutha. The town of Arrowtown lies on the Arrow. Gold was discovered by William Fox in the Arrow river during the Central Otago Gold Rush of the 1860s. This scene where Arwen challenged the Nazg l while rushing Frodo to Rivendell was shot at this location for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Otago is a region of New Zealand in the south of the South Island. The region covers an area of approximately 32,000 square kilometres (12,000 sq mi)making it the country's second largest region. The population of Otago is 207,400 from the June 2010 estimate.
