The gun carriage is supported in the same manner during operation of changing wheels. DESCRIPTION OF THE GATLING GUN. 146. The Gatling gun consists of a main shaft having ten breech-loading rifled barrels lying parallel to it, these barrels being held in place by being firmly locked into front and rear barrel-plates. Directly behind the barrels the carrier block is fastened to the shaft, having channels cut in it to receive and ide the cartridges into the barrels. Behind the carrier lock the main shaft carries two other cylinders called lock guides, in whose surfaces ten grooves are cut for the locks, by which the cartridges are pushed into the barrels. The shaft, to which the group of barrels and both the carrier block and lock cylinders are firmly fastened, is free to turn on its axis, the front end being fastened by a pin to the front barrel plate which revolves with it, and the rear end being journaled in the cascabel-plate. This plate also forms in rear of the diaphragm, a cover for the gearin by which the shaft is revolved. 14. This gearing consists of a toothed wheel fastened to the shaft, and worked by an endless screw on a small axle, which passes transversly through the cascabelplate at right angles to the shaft. and which is furnished outside with a hand crank.
