Now all this jarred on Mr. Thomas' nerves; he was a man of peace, and liked to be gently approved and encouraged in the affairs of life in which he was involved. Had he been a few miles distant, he would not have cared the toss of a penny about the dissensions or vexation his conduct might cause in his brother's family; but living so near to them, to feel them secretly antagonistic, ruffled the placid surface of his soul in an uncomfortable fashion, and for all this there was only one remedy. He would feel quieter and more at rest when the wedding was over, and so the time for the marriage must be fixed as soon as convenient. This was in July, and accordingly the wedding was arranged for the latter part of October. CHAPTER XL PAUL'S FIRST CURACY. lEANWHILE Paul had departed to his new duties, and entered on them with all possible earnestness of purpose and ardent zeal. But that purpose seemed doomed to be overthrown, and that ardour damped even at the commencement of his career. The curacy he had accepted was in one of those low, marshy districts, just so near to the sea as to catch its breezes only as they crossed the intervening marshes, teeming with sickness, fever, and death. A great part of the parish was marsh land, and the whole neighbourhood proverbially unhealthy. Natives, or those who had lived there some considerable time, might experience no evil effects; but strangers settling there, unless of very robust constitution, were almost sure at first to fall victims to the baneful influences.
