Patrick Francis Doyle was born on January 14th, 1889. He lived in Charleville, Co. Cork with his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters. In 1907, when he was 18, the Editor of the Student Department in the Irish Times made the observation; "The brilliant and careless student is comparatively common - but Patrick Doyle is brilliant and careful to a degree". He was a prolific writer and had numerous short stories published in various publications, including Ireland's Own and The Cork Examiner, where he occasionally used the pseudonym 'Kerryman'. In 1910, when he was 21, he worked for H.M. Customs & Excise in Croydon, London. He returned to Ireland in 1918 and worked for the Department of Revenue as a Pensions Officer. Initially he worked in Balinamore, Co. Leitrim, where he met and married Gretta Hyland in 1920. In 1923 he was posted to Portlaoise, Co. Laois and in 1940 he was posted to Dublin. Patrick Francis Doyle died on April 1st, 1947 and was survived by his wife Gretta, sons Gerald, Brendan & William.
