1826 Excerpt: ...the people from their labours by such pretences,
and raising in them desires of holydays and feastings; and to shew
how unlikely they were to obtain such favour, he commanded that the
people should be kept more strictly to their work, and their tasks
to be increased. The officers of the children of Israel thereupon
complained to the King, but had no redress, for he looked upon the
request of going into the wilderness to worship God, to be only a
pretence for idleness, or somewhat else, which it was not proper to
encourage. The elders coming back with an unfavourable answer from
the King, met the two brothers in the way and said to them, " the
Lord look upon you and judge, because you have made Pharaoh and his
servants to abhor us, and have given him a just pretence to put us
to death." The miracles before done in their presence, had no more
effect upon them, than the message delivered to Pharaoh had upon
him. Moses, we read, went and made his complaints to the Lord, and
told him, that, by the message he had sent him with, he had done
his people more harm than good. But his God renewed his promise of
giving them a plentiful country to comfort him, and repeated his
charge. This is only the dressing up the relation to make it appear
something singular "And was not Pharaoh, think yc, a damn'd rascal,
"To hinder the children of Israel, with their wives and their
bairns, and their servants, and their cattle, to go three days
journey into the wilderness to keep the Lord Cod's pascal?" 4 and
wonderful. They had not yet shewn their skill to Pharaoh in a
miraculous manner, because he had not yet called for a miracle to
prove their mission. But the next time they appeared before the
King, they shewed their dexterity in turning Aaron's conjurin...
