Mohammad and Mohammedanism (Hardcover, Facsimile edition)

This work comprises four lectures originally delivered before the Royal Institution in 1874. Together the lectures complete a survey of the Islamic faith as seen from the viewpoint of a mid nineteenth-century writer, and from an historical perspective as much for their intrinsic value, the republication of the lectures will be welcomed by students of the Islamic religion. Although not entirely lacking in the prejudices of his age, the author presents his subject in a sympathetic light, unusual in a period when most Christians sought the imposition of their faith upon others. As the author himself states in his Preface: 'So many Christian writers, as it seems to me, have approached Islam only to vilify and misrepresent it.' In the first three lectures the author presents an empathetic view of Islam, dispelling many of the misrepresentations then widely held. In the final lecture he draws comparisons between the Christian and Islamic faiths and goes some way towards effecting a balanced view of the place of Islam amongst the greatest of world religions.
