On the basis of the evaluation of extensive source material and
with reference to the memories of witnesses living at the time,
this study examines the effects of political upheaval in the period
1918-1946 on educational work in the long-established Francke
Foundations in Halle an der Saale. Despite the problems bound up
with the skepticism accorded to the Weimar Republic, it was a
period that saw a new flourishing of the Foundations. By contrast,
the invasive endeavours of the National Socialist state brought
about their downfall. Ultimately, the legal personality of the
