SPEECH BY SENATOR HEMENWAY At the State Convention April 1 "I will earnestly urge that an extra session of Congress be called immediately after the election for the purpose of revising the tariff. The Republican party has been equal to all emergencies and never has disappointed the public, and I want to say to you and to the voters of Indiana: The party of Lincoln, Harrison, McKinley and Roosevelt is equal to all the questions that now confront us." Senator Hemenway spoke in part as follows: I want to congratulate you upon your opportunity to nominate the next governor of Indiana. We belong to the party that nominates winners; not losers. Republican candidates are winners because Republican principles stand for what the people want. We win because we believe that good administration is the best politics; because we make and execute laws for the benefit of the people; and if we make mistakes, we have the courage to correct our own mistakes and to punish our own offenders. The great majority of the people trusts the Republican party because the majority believes that the Republican party exists for the benefit of the people. Our opponents believe that the people exist for the benefit of the Democratic party. Therefore, I feel confident in saying that you members of this convention are met here not only to nominate a candidate, but to nominate a Governor; and who ever you may select will have the approval of the people next November. QUALITIES OF GREAT PRESIDENT. Republican conventions always can be trusted to select good men.
