If you love travel to strange places and meeting locals with unusual pastimes, together with an interest in nature you will enjoy this quirky book. Each chapter is self contained for easy bedtime reading yet creating a laid back journey with the author through the book from the Isle of Rum, via Bermuda and New York to Greenland and Alaska. You will meet the goat girls of Na Hearadh, the naked cowboy of New York, talking statues, elves, santas to mention a few of the weird and wonderful folk encountered. You will share their strange pastimes including wife carrying championships and bog snorkeling contests. From the title it is apparent that this is also a book about nature and here the author excels in describing his adventures in seeking the elusive Puffin as well as other creatures including sea otters, grizzly and polar bears. This is a warm beautifully written book sans the profanities so common in contemporary literature. I look forward to his next book bringing us strange tales from another part of our fascinating planet. Bill Bryson you have competition.
