A WW II Japanese major on Bougainville Island takes off in a rusty fighter plane as if on a kamikaze mission, then gets shot down and crashes into the jungle of nearby Satan Island while carrying a precious metal box he actually meant to escape with. . . . What was in the box? That's a strong opening grabber, but the story that follows - 30 years later - is formula action-suspense. Michael Barron, a writer who has just published a book about Spitfires, is in Melbourne to claim an inheritance when he is offered a great deal of money by the dead major's rich sister (she phones from Tokyo) to reclaim the Major's body from the jungle and bring it home for burial. When Barron locates his inheritance - a rural airstrip, a defunct flying school, and a dirigible-like airship in need of new engines - he agrees to undertake the mission: the sister will pay for the new engines, Barren will air-sail to Satan Island and lift off the Major's corpse, and then the airship will be ready to use in Barron's new air-freight delivery business. Many folks wish to interfere with this plan, including those who believe the major's steel box contains diamonds, and those who think it contains damaging photographs of a millionaire U.S. politician who acted abysmally while interned in a Japanese camp. The tale hurtles toward its predictable ironies, but competently and briskly enough for an undemanding audience. (Kirkus Reviews)
