A very handsome Roman tesselated pavement was found in the park in 1730, 41 ft. by 28, which was engraved by Vertue (there is a needlework reproduction at Littlecote); and at Rudge the very curious brass cup described by Horsley and Sir R. C. Hoare, with the legend Aballava UXELODUM CAMBOGLANS BANNA A" MAIS. 2 m. N. of Ramsbury is Albourn, giving name to the ancient chase, which had its share in inducing royal residence at Marlborough, and which was the scene in 1643 of the defeat of Essex by Charles and Rupert. 5m.
