It was founded in 1955 on the Qinghai-Tibet road north of the Tangla mountain range. According to The Guinness Book of World Records, Wenzhuan had the highest elevation of any city - 16,730 feet/5,019 meters above sea level., although National Geographic Magazine (May 2003) gives that title to the larger city of La Rinconada, Peru which lies at 5,100 meters over sea level.
