Excerpt from book: A CHRISTMAS HYMN. When the Lord of glory came In the likeness of a child, Seraphs, with their tongues of flame, Sang, His advent to proclaim, Harmless, pure, and undefiled. Brother! sister! has your tongue Caught the song they sang of yore ? Have you evil from you flung ? Peace and good-will have you sung? Love to all men evermore ? But, when coming to His own, There was not a room to spare; So he turn'd aside, unknown, Found a stable home alone, Found a manger cradle th' re. Brother! sister! have you room In the chamber of your heart ? When He seeks an earthly home, Should the new-born Jesus come, Will you bid him thence depart 1THE LOST ONE. I Belong to the streets! the cold, cold streets! Where sympathy one seldom meets, And my life is a life of sin; I wear a smile on my pale, pale face, The unguarded heart to win. But oh! what searcher fails to trace The worm that is gnawing within ? You may oft hear my laugh! my wild, wild laugh ! As madd'ning midnight bowl I quaff In flaring hells of reeking shame. Who'll buy ? who will buy the gay, gay toy f Who recks not of health or fame 1 I'll clutch your gold with fiend-like joy? 'Tis the price of my soul I claim. I must shrink from the light! the fair, fair light! When sunbeams gleam on pavement bright; In the ev'ning alone I stray; I stifle the voice, the still, small voice, That once had the pow'r to sway The demon's laugh, where I rejoice. I curse, but I never can pray. And yet I have gold! I have bright, bright gold! Gay clinking, when it's sum is told, Or as I with its bright charms toy. The way it is won?who heeds ? who heeds ? 'Twill buy me many a joy. Ha! ha! I'd do e'en darker deeds For the bright, bright, bright yellow boy! SAILO...
