The echoes of a true and noble life attest the faithfulness of the great Promiser, and the temptations and struggles and achievements of the good, instruct and quicken the generations that follow. In the tomb of the servant, as in that of the Master, there is the fragrance of sweet spices. If a Christian minister has been eminently a Christian man, the record of his life illustrates the power and beauty of that truth which it was his business to explain and enforce. Memory connects him with the texts from which he preached, and gives his voice an immortality, by joining it with that word "which liveth and abideth for ever." Such a minister was the subject of this sketch--a man of courage and energy, of humility and tenderness, of truth and sagacity and devoutness--a "man greatly beloved" by all that knew him, and most beloved by those who knew him best. Robert French was born on the 4th of December, 1842, at Kirkconnel, in Dumfriesshire. His parents, who are now resident in Glasgow, are excellent specimens of the rural population of Scotland, being intelligent and well conducted, respectable, and respected. At that time they were regular attendants on the ministrations of the parish church, intent on earning an honest independence, and determined, to give their children a good education and example. Like the other members of the family, Robert received his early education at the parish school of his native village; and when he began to cherish the wish of going to college, he removed to Sanquhar, and resided some time with Mr. Orr, the schoolmaster of that town, who had a high reputation as a teacher in the upper parts of Nithsdale.
