Robert Redford, now 71, obviously still has what it takes when he can command top billing above the likes of Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise in this up-to-the-minute political drama about the war in the Middle East. He plays Dr Stephen Malley: an idealist college professor; who finds that two of his former students Todd (Andrew Garfield) and Ernest (Michael Pena) have joined the US Army, and are part of the action in Afghanistan. The two young men, although good friends, are total opposites in personality in every way. Meanwhile, wannabe presidential candidate Senator Jasper Irving (Tom Cruise) is giving seasoned TV journalist Janine Roth (Meryl Streep) the low down on a planned future military strategy; knowing full well that the operation has already begun even as they are talking! Although realising that she is being manipulated, her commercial-minded boss is only too happy to print the story. Redford also directs; and its well put together, though has nothing really new to offer. However, with a cast like this, is such a detail really important? I think not!
