Visually spectacular and with many truly beautiful sequences, this 161-minute epic's having won seven Oscars and nominated for yet another four says it all! The Oscars include Best Picture; Best Director (Sydney Pollack); Best Sound, Best Cinematography, and Best Musical Score (John Barry.) Set over the period from 1914 to 1931 and loosely based on a true autobiography, the principal actors are Meryl Street and Robert Redford - though it's good to also see veteran British comedian Leslie Phillips in a minor role here, as the governor.
The story is of a Danish artstocrat (played by Meryl Streep) who marries and goes to Africa with her new husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) to start a dairy farm there. But life doesn't always pan out the way things have been planned, particularly when she meets big-game hunter Denys Hatton (Robert Redford).
Composer John Barry is no novice when it comes to providing the right musical atmosphere for the African outdoors, having previously won an Oscar for Born Free some years ago, and his work here is right up to standard!
This masterfully crafted, breathtakingly produced story of love and loss earned Oscars for Best Picture (1985), Director, Screenplay (based on material from another medium), Cinematography, Original Score, Art Direction (Set Decoration) and Sound.
Out of Africa is one of the screen's great epic romances and tells the fascinating true story of Karen Blixen, a strong-willed woman who, with her philandering husband, runs a coffee plantation in Kenya circa 1914.
To her astonishment, she soon discovers herself falling in love with the land, it's people and a mysterious hunter.
