The visitor will be continually awed by the grandeur of this park with the crown jewel being Yosemite Valley, a seven-mile gorge that is lined with granite massifs and an abundance of spectacular waterfalls that plunge over steep cliffs. Half Dome, Clouds Rest, Cathedral Rock, Three Arches and the largest granite rock on earth, El Capitan, rise sharply out of the valley. Yosemite Falls, over 2,400 feet long, is the highest falls in North America and fifth highest in the world. Beyond the valley is Tuolumne Meadows. This area is surrounded by smooth granite domes and snow-capped peaks. Miles of hiking trails wind through this most picturesque high-mountain meadow.
Hikes in the park range from quiet paths through giant sequoia groves to fairly strenuous climbs up Yosemite's chiseled gorget, All hikes can be completed within the day, usually in one to four hours. Some hikes can be continued farther into the backcountry. Trails have been chosen for their geological features, scenery, and locations throughout the park. Both popular and lesser-known hikes are included. Each hike includes its own map, a summary, accurate driving and hiking directions, and a quick overview of distance/time/elevation.
