Living in the Global Society (Hardcover)

The materials that make up this volume come from an international conference held in Rome from the 30th November to the 2nd December 1995 on the topic "Economics - for what kind of future?" The papers discuss the effects, rules, institutions, and philosophy of those processes which have generally come to be called globalization. The debates concentrate above all on the economic aspects of globalization, not because it was regarded as a purely economic issue, but because economic factors - and in particular finance, rather than the so-called real economy - have clearly taken the lead role, determining how, and in what sort of climate globalization occurs. The texts are grouped in four parts, and from these discussions two main threads emerge. The first idea is of co-operative competition, which was the focal point of the conference, and is dealt with primarily in part four. The second, which repeatedly emerges as a source of widespread concern, is the need and the search for sustainable globalization.
