His plea of prior connection with her (which to her shame she did not disavow), was a most improbable story, as she could only have been nine years old when contracted with Thomas of Lancaster. VOL. II. Mr. Hoghton fell In the affray at Lea, he could not hare been more than 29 years old instead of 62 as stated by Balnea tablet to his memory in Wigan church (removed to Duxbury hall, where it was seen and copied by Dodsworth) is printed in vol. li-of the Chetham series, p. 261, as well as by Mr. Hill. Baines alludes to a temporary alienation of the manor of Newton in the reign of Edward IV., misled, probably, by an estate of the Duke of Exeter in Newton, being recited in the Bolls of Parliament as the Manor of Newton. Furthermore, it was only the Duke's moiety of the manor of Haydock which was forfeited--the other moiety inherited by the Leghs being intact. On the 22nd February 1-72, Mr. William Beamont read, at the meeting of the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire, a paper on "The Fee of Makerflold, with an account of some of its Lords, Barons of Newton."
