Not illustrated.1889 Excerpt: ... SIXTEENTH ANNUAL CONVEESAZIONE. The Sixteenth Annual Conversazione of the Eoyal Colonial Institute (founded in 1868, and incorporated by Eoyal Charter in 1882) was held at the Eoyal Albert Hall and the adjacent Conservatory, on Tuesday, July 2, 1889, and was attended by a highly representative concourse of colonists and their friends, numbering about 2,500. The Hall was decorated with choice plants, flowers, and flags, the motto of the Institute, "The Queen and United Empire" being conspicuously displayed in front of the great organ. The string band of the Eoyal Artillery played a selection of music, and the London Vocal Union sang glees at intervals in the Eoyal Albert Hall; and the band of the Eoyal Horse Guards (Blues) played in the Conservatory, their programme including "Hands All Eound," by the Poet Laureate (a Fellow of the Institute), and "The Empire Flag," by Dr. Mackenzie. Eefreshments were served in the Conservatory crush-rooms. A series of water-colour paintings of British Columbian scenery, by Mr. Lucius E. O'Brien, President of the Eoyal Canadian Academy, were on view in the East Crush-room. The guests were received in the Arena by the Eight Hon. the Marquis of Lome, K.T., G.C.M.G., and Sir Henry Barkly, G.C.M.G., K.C.B., Vice-Presidents, and the following members of the Council: Sir Charles Clifford, Bart.; Sir John Coode, K.C.M.G.; Mr. F.
