Thou first didst mar the universal joy, Disturb Heaven's bliss, creation's peace destroy. From thee have sprung all evil and all sin; All pain, all death, did with thy guilt begin. Justly thou mayst be charged with all the woe Endured by hellish hosts in realms below; With every pang those spirits ever felt, Since first, from Heaven expell'd, with-thee they dwelt. Thou mayst be charged with all the woes of earth, By man experienced since creation's birth; With all the misery, suffering, grief, and pain, Which o'er the world have spread their gloomy reign. Thou mayst be charged with all the mighty store Of torment and of wrath, for evermore, Which men and demons lost shall feel in Hell, While through Eternity their torments swell. Thou art accused, last charge and worst of all, That, like none else, self-tempted thou didst fall. Created perfect, holy, sinless, pure, Able to stand, and from assault secure; By no external influence moved to sin, Thou didst thyself create the cause within; Eeeble and small at first, till, unrepress'd, Cherish'd and loved, it grew within thy breast, In strength and might increasing every day, Till all thy soul confess'd its welcome sway. These are the crimes for which thou art arraign'd, From heaven excluded, and in fetters-chain'd. If false the charge--if aught thou hast to plead In answer or defence, --stand forth--proceed." Thus Satan's full and dark indictment ends, While in deep silence every ear attends. Each word is through that vast assemblage heard, And with strange horror every breast is stirr'd. As charge on charge peals through the startled air, All hearts respond, and secret witness bear. All eyes are steadfast towards him guilty...
