Using the daughter as her main character and narrator, the author gives an intimate portrait of a Russian-German immigrant family who arrive in San Antonio, Texas in 1956. Through the insightful eyes of the daughter, the reader sees the trials and tribulations of her determined, always upbeat father, as well as the rest of her family. The story begins with her father and mother opening a small restaurant in San Antonio and continues on an unlikely journey to a small Texas border town where the family buys an old run-down motel. Throughout the novel, the author weaves in characters and stories from their past in Russia and Germany which provides a contrast and perspective on what it means to become an American.
