The second Grade Dynamic Phonics and Reading uses twenty-eight Reading Books to take students to a new level of reading ability. Some old favorites from the first grade level are back. Emily and Elaine Rose make and solve new problems. Jonathan has a Not-So-Great-Week that he's ready to tell you about. Find out the secret of a dog's talent in "Francis Dances. A boy named Benny finds out how little a penny can buy in "Benny's Pennies. Two hedgehogs hunt for the ingredients to their favorite snack, then share the recipe with you in "Hedgehog Fudge. A girl named Mary solves a big problem in "Mary, Whiskers, and the Whale. On the back of each book is a list of new and review words used in the story. Children can practice the words in isolation and then read them in the context of the story. Most books are fifteen to sixteen pages long. Books are printed in black and white with pictures the students may color. Detailed Daily Lesson Plans in the Teacher's Manual clearly state the objectives, tell what is needed to prepare for the lessons, and give clear directions on how to teach the concepts. The lesson plans include handwriting assignments that coordinate with the sounds and words the child has learned. Phonics lessons are integrated with language, spelling, reading, and handwriting concepts. Lessons are easy to understand and require very little daily preparation for the teacher. The Teacher's Manual includes four quarterly tests, weekly tests, answers for workbook pages, and reduced size copies of the reading books to allow you to follow along with the child. Two workbooks provide daily activities for reinforcement of concepts taught in the lessons. The optional Handwriting Book comes infive formats; traditional, modern, or cursive styles. For those wanting to introduce cursive midyear, two transitional formats are available. Students begin the year using the modern or traditional style then transition to cursive after lesson 80.
