The functional use of music in selected cultural institutions of the Basotho is examined; and specifically the institutions of divination, initiation and birth. Musical instruments relatively indigenous to the Basotho, some of which feature significantly during ritual activities associated with the institutions, are examined. The author, a sociologist from the National University of Lesotho, illustrates the role of music in Sesotho culture in the realization of desired cultural goals and aspirations.
