F. 25 - D CANUTE (the "Great"), KING OF ENGLAND (A.D. 1016-1035) Canute son ot Sweyn King of Denmark, on his father's death, and the consequent restoration of Ethelred II, invaded England to support his claim to the throne, but he had to sustain an arduous struggle with Ethelred and afterwards with his son Edmund Ironsides, with varying successes on both sides, until at length an arrangement was made between Canute and Edmund to divide the kingdom between them, and on the death of the latter, the former became the undisputed King of England which he ruled wisely, equitably, and well, although he was burdened as well with the care of governing Denmark and Norway. Canute's death took place in England, and he was buried in the Minster of Winchester Cathedral. 3763 Silver. Axminster penny (Rnd. 22-1). + CNVT RECXDiademed and cuirassed bust with sceptre to left.
