Appleby, the Prior then absent, was excluded from the house; and F. Nicholas Becket, the novice master, with the recently professed Swithbert Latham, were turned out; F. Constantius (Matthews or Nuttall) being allowed grace until 14 November to decide whether he would accept the terms or not. On 15 January, 1615, the Holy Office discussed the rescinding of the approval given to Anselmian Union. On 19 February, 1615, this Union was, by the authority of the Pope, suspended, and all monks were directed to return to the obedience of their original profession. But this did not temper the proceedings of F. Mayhew and Arthur Pits, as appears from a formal "declaration" of the Primate and Chapter of Nancy issued three months later, to the effect that no monks of the Spanish profession could claim even to live at Dieulewart (ut ne, qui dem concesso sibi hospitii jure gaudere queant). The foregoing details are, I think, all that is necessary for understanding the early Laurentian fasti. Whilst in the other houses all 4 They were only four: Mayhew who signs first, Sadler, Nicholas Fitzjames and Laurence Reyner. Fitzjames soon withdrew from the connexion and went to the mission in England. Early in 1615 FF. Paulinus Appleby and and Nicholas Becket, two expelled monks, were sent to England to inform the missioners as to the real state of the question in regard to the Anselmian Union and kindred matters. Fitzjames, now enlightened, is among the signatories to the petition of Spanish missioners to the Pope dated 11 June, 1615, strongly objecting to the Anselmian Union and speaking somewhat plainly as to the persons who had dev...
