Before passing from the account of the Alumni Association, it surely will not be considered invidious to name specially three or four out of that large body of cordial and generous friends of St. Pauls. The services of the Rev. E. M. Parker to the association, as its secretary, have been invaluable. His duties have entailed great labors, but they have been labors of love. The roll of the alumni lately prepared by him contains information interesting to every Concordian, and this information is, moreover, remarkably accurate. The Alumni Annual is also due to Mr. Parker's efforts. It never fails to be welcomed wherever it is sent and to arouse kindly memories in all its readers. To another alumnus, Major Charles H. Whipple, U. S. A., the school has been greatly indebted for giving annually since 1874 a gold medal to the boy passing the best written examination on an assigned theme in English literature. A play of Shakespeare has generally been selected as the subject. On nine occasions the celebrated Shakespearean scholar, the Rev. Henry N. Hudson, set the question paper, made the decisions, and conferred the prizes. He always gave a short address to the boys when announcing the results of the examination, and he won their hearts and minds to his way of thinking entirely. He talked to them about literature, particular books and authors, in language within the comprehension of the youngest--vigorous, racy, often full of poetical thoughts, and always holding the attention of his hearers. He came to be regarded by the boys in the light of a friend. His visits were looked forward to with pleasure, and his lectures, talks, and sermons greatly enjoyed.
