This publication is the result of a joint effort by ECLAC and IICA for the purpose of summing up the performance of the agriculture sector in Latin America and the Caribbean in the 1990-2000 period. It also takes into account the principalchallenges that will have to be faced in the future. In this regard, it is a continuation of a similar endeavour made by the two organizations several years ago, referring to the 1970-1995 period. In this study, an individualized approach was taken, meaning that each country's situation and the various agricultural policies applied throughout the region were taken into account. Similarly, an effort was made to identify problems and solutions that were common to all countries during the period of reference. The analysis was focused on agricultural production and trade in the region. For this purpose, background information and statistical data were obtained from the main international institutions involved in this field. Like the previous study, this one provides a graphic presentation accompanied by brief comments to make it easier to become familiar with the region's agricultural situation. This approach also facilitates the work of the various agents participating in this sector, who desire to enhance productivity and make the farm sector more effective as a component of each country's economy.
