SINCE the year 1640, the people had been without any apprehensions or danger to their religious or civil privileges. They prudently acknowledged subjection to the parliament, and afterwards to Cromwell, so far as was necessary to keep upon terms, and avoid exception, and no farther. The addresses to the parliament and Cromwell shew this to have been the cafe. After Cromwell's death, during the frequent changes in the supreme authority in England, they seem to have taken part with none, but to have waited until some settlement was made, which should have a prospect of liability *. I have no where met with any marks of disrespect to the memory of the late King, and there is no room to suppose they were under disaffection to his son, and if they feared his restoration it was because they expected a change in religion, and that a persecution of all non-conformisls would follow iff. At the election in May, they I find this remark in an ancient manuscript, wrote about the year 1665, " When a packet of letters was Cent by Mr. John Thurloe, containing au express order of the council, signed by Henry Lawrencepresident, requiring and enjoining the governor and magistrates of the Massachufets colony to proclaim Richard in thele following terms, that is to fay, Lprd Protector of the common.wealth of England, Scotland and Ireland, and the territories thereunto belonging, they did not obey the said order. And since his Majesty King Charles this second was proclaimed in the Massachufets, at Boston and other places, they have not sailed, in all their courts and judicial proceedings throughout the colony, to give...
