But now he was advanc'd to one of the firfl: Dignities of the Church, and was made one of the Apoftles Succeflbrs; now he was appointed one of the chief Overfeers ofChrifts Holy Catholick Flock, and was inverted with the fame Authority that the Son of God Incarnate had delegated to the firfl Preachers of Chriftianity, he began inceflantly to do the Work of an Evangelijl, and other Things requifite to fo great and high a Calling, as making a ftrid: Inquifition into the Behaviour of his Inferiour Clergy, caufing his Arch-Deacon to make a narrow Infpection into any Breaches made upon the Canons by Parifh Officers, &c. enquiring into the Wants and Neceflities of the Poor, and providing for them after the mod ample, but legal Manner; infomuch, that When at the Expiration of three Years, during ring all which Time, at every Seflion of Parliament, he gave no other Vote in the Houfe of Peers, than what tended to the Good of the Ghurch, and the Prefervation of the State; he was called, notwithftanding his earned Entreaties to abide where he was, to the higheft Ecclefiaftical Preferment in the Kingdom.
