To human reason there appeared no probable grounds why the obligations of that institution should not be perpetual. It had a divine origin, --it was given under circumstances of peculiar solemnity, and ratified by all the symbols of the Majesty of Heaven: it had triumphed over the early superstitions of Dan and Bethel, and been adhered to throughout the chequered period of theirpolitical existence; it was a standing proof of the partiality of God enjoyed for 1500 years, --the badge of their separation from the world, and in keeping of it they looked for great reward. True it is that according to one sense put upon the prophetical writings, this law was only to last until certain ends were accomplished; but it is equally true that this in their eyes was only "of private interpretation," and looked upon as an arbitrary hypothesis, presumptuously broached by a few poor and ignorant schismatics in support of their new sect; while another, and a very different one, was maintained by all the learning of the Priesthood and the Rabbis, and canonized by the voice of authoritative tradition. The implicit reliance they placed upon the elders, as the only keepers of the key of knowledge, made them believe it highly criminal to question their decisions; and as the habits to which they were wedded would lead them to think a contrary doctrine morally unfit, so their judgements would be equally perverted to condemn it as logically improper. But especially as they knew that the kingdom of Satan and the idolatrous worship of the Heathens had been established and supported by false and lying wonders, they would be slow in admitting the abrogation of their own law, which...
