Tom Symalla's Here and There is a collection of stories that paint a portrait of a generation. The author tells stories of growing up in the 1960's in the small town of Cold Spring, Minnesota. He tells stories of baseball, Catholic grade school, hunting and ice fishing, driver's ed and phy ed, marching band, tadpoles, snakes, and woodchucks. Symalla also spins stories of going to college in the 1970's, including stories of a foiled heist at a nearby women's college, goldfish-eating contests and panty raids, an emergency appendectomy, and a groggy late-night encounter with a creature hiding under his dormitory bed. As an adult, Symalla tells stories of triumph and disappointment, new friends and lost friends, missed opportunities, a heart surgery, brown bats and red squirrels, and a hopeful encounter with an exotic dancer.
