Perhaps the term "intelligence-tests" is subject to criticism of the sort implied and the more cautious are interested in specific tests for as simple powers as possible-the isolation of somewhat elemental phenomena. The chapter of modern psychology on individual differences has grown up along with knowledge of this chapter on the unmodifiability of capacity, and has helped furnish motive for a technique of testing as a practical, diagnostic procedure, as compared with the theoretical purpose in the earlier psychophysical laboratory study of psychology. So the technique of testing is partially ready, when any new field wants its method. Testing for college-entrance is one case under choice of career, and perhaps will bring improvement in that very conception of it. One might venture the hope that collegeattendance itself would be inclined to' elevate its importance by beginning career, instead of merely closing boyhood. Tests for it might well imply a chosen pursuit which in turn would rigorously choose its members. It would be wholesome for all concerned, if parents might be as definitely warned of fitness and unfitness, as Professor Seashore can now declare musical capacity. Of course we shall wait after that day for the millenial acquiescence of fond parents who shall refrain from joining together what the vocational psychologist confidently tries to put and keep asunder.
