This crossing was shoaled by a wave of sand about 2 feet in depth, passing over a hard bottom. The sand wave formed a long reef extending diagonally across the channel from one side to the other, with little variation in depth of water on the crest of the reef. The river having become exceeding low and continuing to fall, and the current being very slack, there seemed to be no possibility of an early opening of the channel except by dredging. The hydraulic dredge (leyser and outfit were moved to this point from Clinton, Iowa, by the launches Emily and Louise, arriving July 14. Two cuts were made through the bar, covering an area 700 feet long and 200 feet wide. The dredged material, 26,000 cubic yards, consisting of sand and gravel, with some sawmill refuse and a little clay, was deposited between dams along Island 2. Five snags, uncovered by the dredging in the nard bottom, were removed. A very similar condition existed at the upper crossing at stock yards, just below Kaposia Point, the bottom being hard with a sand wave passing over it and making a long diagonal reef. On account of the greater quantity of sawmill refuse and clay mixed with the sand and gravel, dredging was slower than at the lower crossing.
