Did I understand you to say that four volunteer ofiicers and one militia ofiicer obtained certificates?--Eight volunteer ofiicers including two field ofiicers obtained certificates; the militia ofiicer belonging to the school did not obtain his certificate; he is going on for the second month. 727. (C'hai1-man.) You have only had one militia oflicer?--Another joined during the month of November, and a third who was under Colonel Young for two months has got permission to join us for the sake of getting a certificate, which he will obtain in a few days. I expect that three militia oflicers will get certificates at the end of this month. 728. I suppose you have other oflicers under instruction who have not yet obtained those certificates?--Yes; at present there is another class; two remained on, or I may say three, for one was sick. 729. How many have you now under instruction altogether?--Nine. 730. (Sir J. L. Simmons.) How is the instruction given to these oflicers at Woolwich? What is the nature of the course which they go through?--I have got here astatement of every day s employment, which I can hand in if the Committee would like to see it. 731. Will you state it generally?--I will refer you to the certificate to be given to the oflicers according to the War Ofiicc form, No.-580 and 581: -- I certify that such-and-such a field oflicer, of such-and-such a regiment, is thoroughly acquainted with and capable of directing the drill and practice of the guns used by the corps or administrative brigade to which the field ofiicer belongs, and that he...
