Excerpt: ... The Graduate Magazine of the University of Kansas Volume I NOVEMBER 19o2 Number 2 INAUGURATION Of Dr. Frank Strong As Chancellor Of The University Of Kansas, October 16, 17, 18, 19o2. The resignation of Dr. F. H. Snow as Chancellor of the University of Kansas, was tendered to the Board of Regents in June, 19o1, to take effect the following September. Eight months previously Dr. Snow had been compelled, by reason of ill health, to give up the work of the Chancellor's office, and had left the University in order to regain that bodily vigor which had been so seriously impaired by the burden of his official duties. At that time it was hoped he would soon resume the leadership of the University; but that expectation was not realized. Dr. Snow, believing that the resumption of the duties of the administration of the office would be at the risk of the permanent destruction of his health, and desiring, furthermore, to return to well-beloved scientific pursuits, determined upon his resignation as Chancellor of the University, and this resignation was, accordingly, tendered to the Board of Regents, and accepted by them. When Dr. Snow left the University, in the fall of 19oo, Mr. W. C. Spangler, of Lawrence, a graduate of the University, and Judge J. P. Sams, of Seneca, a member of the Board of Regents, were placed in charge of the institution. This joint management continued until the expiration, early in 19o1, of Judge Sams's term of office, and Mr. Spangler's appointment, in February, to a place on the Board, when Mr. Spangler was placed in sole charge of the duties of administration. These duties he discharged faithfully and well, until the announcement of Dr. Snow's retirement. At this time the Board of Regents was confronted by two questions: First, the choice...
